Actual Play – Fall “Change the Channel”

In an effort to stop the game being Buffy in Real Time a couple of days actually passed in the last session of Fall. There was a terrible problem though, which is that due to various amounts of lost sleep, hyperactivity and sugary drinks we all kept having to stop play and giggle for five minutes at a time. Me and Sophie may have also tried to start a dance off.

None of this had any bearing at all on the title of the episode.

The time passing made me happy because it meant that Calvin’s damage was reduced down to a measly 4, which is nothing at all, practically. It also allowed us to skip over the boringness that is school without Calvin and Saturday, on which Calvin took a first aid course so that he can stop hurting all the time. Oh right. This show isn’t just about Calvin.

It’s a snowy Sunday morning and Darius is taking a break from reading. He’s bonding with his dog and playing fetch. Unfortunately due to health and/or safety issues the dog isn’t actually on set that day, so Darius is just throwing a stick off screen and then getting it back somehow. (I think this is where the silliness started, don’t you?) Megan comes over to visit, bringing a vase to replace the one that evil Megan broke. Darius is edgy around her. They talk about what to do with the magic mirror and decide to visit Haruni. They call Alex to see if she wants to come. She is shopping with her mother at the mall and after some confused double speak arranges to come over to Darius’s at 2.

Darius then calls Calvin, who declines the invitation, saying he’d rather stay in. Darius tries to convince him.
D: But we’re going to see Haruni!
C: Yeah, and?
D: I thought we’d drive up in Kermit…
C: You have a car don’t you?
D: …yeah.

Megan grabbed the phone off Darius and tried the same kind of tactics.
M: What if we get attacked by a park ranger?
C: You’ll have Alex there won’t you?
M:…yeah
C: So, she’s got super strength. You don’t need me.
M: …

They hung up and discussed Calvin’s sudden lack of interest.
M: Why doesn’t he want to come with us?
D: Well, he has a girlfriend now.
M: He has a girlfriend??
D: Yeah, you know. Gina.
M: She’s not even from this dimension!

Alex turns up around 2 and they secure the mirror to the top of Darius’s station wagon. It turns out Calvin’s giant car would have been useful. The three drive up to the National park and make their way to Haruni’s cave, he is outside craving ice sculptures to make the approach to his cave more homey. Unfortunately his idea of homey is terrifying tentacled monsters. When Haruni sees the intrepid scoobies he makes an ‘ah ha’ kind of noise and brings out an old TV he has wrapped with copper wire. On it is an image of Bob Barker.

bobbarker Haruni talks quietly and Bob Barker speaks in a language the kids can understand. “Marvellous invention these things,” Haruni/Bob says. “Perfect conductors.”

Darius and Alex explain the problem with the mirror side world and evil Megan.
Haruni/Bob: I suspect what you have there is a pocket dimension. Smaller than a bag dimension. I’m not sure that got translated correctly.

Haruni admits that he could easily move the mirror into another dimension, such as a Hell one. He also mentions that he knows one or two people who would be willing to pay good money for the mirror. The scoobies confer over this.
Alex: So we could sell evil Megan’s dimension to a Hell god?
D: But there’s nice people in there too. If it was just Megan….
M: Evil Megan!

They decide that it’s maybe not ethically alright. Alex says they should check to find out if the whole dimension is bad or if it’s ok to save it. They show the magic mirror to Haruni. He was fascinated with the enchantments and started trying to work out how to do it himself. There was some sort of effect he did where he traced a circle in mid air with his finger and started affecting the fabric of space time. I can’t remember what he was trying to achieve but it was a nice visual.

Then he remembered his manners and offered them food and drink. Alex and Darius were too scared to accept but Megan asked for some water.
Haruni: With or without fish?
M: Uh….without.
Haruni hands her a huge vase full of water, she sips it tentatively.

They eventually decide to take their leave and drive back into town. Alex convinces Darius to go via Calvin’s so they can talk to Gina about the mirror world and what River Fall was really like. And check that Gina isn’t some sort of horrific monster from the other side. On the way they wonder about what would happen if real world Gina came back to Fall River.
Alex: what happens if two people from different dimensions meet?
Darius: Well, if its anything like Star Trek they might explode.
A: Exactly. I mean, what?

They ring Calvin’s door bell. After a couple of minutes he answers the door. He’s looking relaxed and happy, Gina and he have spent the day on the couch watching videos, which is strange for Gina. “Hey, wasn’t this movie set in River Fall?” Calvin lets the others in, somewhat reluctantly.
Calvin: She doesn’t really like talking about that stuff…

When Gina sees Megan she makes an excuse to leave the room as soon as she can. Alex follows her and Calvin follows Alex, he’s a bit protective of Gina it seems. Alex gently but firmly quizzes Gina on River Fall, how back she can remember and when everything started going wrong. Gina can pinpoint the time exactly. “When Megan became a freshman.” she says. It sounds like River Fall was a perfectly normal place before then, and then it all went nasty very fast. Megan got power at school and then just kept on getting power. Alex thanks her for the information.
Gina: So, how long are you and….Megan….going to be here?
A: We’re just going.

She hustles Darius and Megan out of the house and into the car. They are protesting, they don’t think they’ve got what they came for yet. In the car Alex catches them up about Gina’s previous life and assures them that she doesn’t appear to be evil or a monster.

On Monday morning the gang all arrive at school. Calvin has brought Gina in to enrol, she’s not sure what else to do in this brave new world. A quick crime roll and Calvin fast talked her onto the school roll and classes started up.

That’s where we left it because the giggling was getting seriously bad and it was also getting late at night. So yeah, next time we’ll actually you know, move some plots forward or something.
